No great events come without hard work, and so is the case of 'Mending Fences'.

Pre- Exhibition preparations echoed in the empty hall of Science Centre... welcoming the packed arts delivered to the spot by 25 different Artists from all over India... The art works silently waited, lined up to be displayed… and occupy a space on the wall to convey to the audience the thoughts of their creators.

Shortage of time, loads to manage…. two brilliant heads ----- Rahul Bhattacharya & Karishma Shah and many young helping hands… driven by excitement, tension, ideas & PASSION (also cigarettes at times :P)…. This is exactly how the picture looked liked.

One never knows how big a part; stuff such as Stair-Stands, Cello-tapes, Double side tapes, Plastic wire… etc etc play…. and help the art pieces to travel from the packed boxes to the display walls to be gazed... appreciated... envied.

#MendingFences is a common thread which is joining them and 13 other artists from all over the country and exhibiting their works in Science Centre, Surat from 11th to 14th of October 2012. Curated by Rahul Bhattacharya, (an Independent Art Historian, Joint Secretary of Performers Independent and the co founder of R.A.P.E.  Also has been the editor of Art&Deal Magazine, and the curator of Rang Rasiya Freedom of Expression Movement) and Karishma Shah, (an independent art practitioner based in Surat, working with pedagogy and building a new audience for visual arts) such happening are of extremely rare variety in the Surat City, a land better suited for churning out producers than poets. The Project comes out of a shared concern that the audience base for Contemporary Indian Art is too narrow. 'Mending Fences' aims at connecting the language, practice and culture of contemporary. We at the #LifeInSurat Blog would be documenting this event. Surat... a place where the romance of India's timelessness goes up on trial in sweat shops and commercial retail outlets; is slowly but definitely witnessing a cultural shift. Attempts like Bookoholics and #MendingFences are witnesses to that. Here is what curators are planning to present you with, in the form of #MendingFences -

  • Oct 11th (5 PM onwards) till Oct 14th (till 8 PM) - An exhibition showcasing the best of the varied practices that are emerging as the future of contemporary art, with a collection of young and early mid career artists.
